Google scans the internet all day in order to fill their search engines. While doing this, they find a lot ofhacked websites that contain Malware and Virusses. In 2012 that was almost 10,000 per day…Chances are big your website will be hacked some day. Or maybe you have already been a victim.

The hacking of websites is a common problem and a risk that should not be underestimated. There areplenty of examples of hacks and not just small websites. Als the bigger ones like Facebook and Twitter are at risk.

Comment spam, sql or php injection, DDOS attacks, if your website has been hacked, those words may sound familiar.

Why do hackers do that?

Money… Hackers are looking for bank- and account login data, credit card information and other ways to find money. In order to do that, they want to use your server or website. Through existing reliable website they send spam, listen to internet traffic and try to get your login details.

The longer a hack goes unnoticed, the better it is for the hackers. That way they can go about their business and use your sites reputation and stay anonymous themselves. They like to use “normal” websites with a good reputation, because that means their mails will look more reliable. Since your website is not connected to spam or porn (yet), these mails will not automatically marked as such.

How do they do it?

1) They have the access codes to your ftp or cpanel

They have received these through copies of your mails. Or, you may have a key logger on your workstation. A sniffer or Trojan logs all your key strokes and sends it to them. They analyze that and filter out any usernames and password. Having a good anti-virus program on your workstation is a must.

2) Through a leak in the server or your website

This could be through the software that your website is using, like WordPress, Cakephp, Drupal, Joomla, Magento, Modx, Ruby etc. But also via a contact form or a forum.

Sooner or later, most software has a leak somewhere. That happens to the best, companies like Google, Facebook and Microsoft have their own update procedures for that. Your Google Chrome, Firefox andMac and Windows computers are automatically updated with patches and security fixes. But your website is not…!

If you do not update this in time (straight after releases), it is just a matter of time before you get hacked. Most programmers and website owners are not aware of this. They have other priorities and don´t know that this has to be done frequently and manually. The times we have seen hacked Joomla, Drupal and WordPress sites because of outdated plugins and software versions are numerous.
