What are typical optimization tips? Caching is the keyword. Caching of Magento (block caching) of the MySql server, browser caching of your visitors but also using inno_db as the storage engine or fastCGI depending on your linux distribution. Most experts agree that Magento should not be hosted on a traditionalshared environment. It needs dedicated resources like the internal memory (RAM) and processor (cpu) of the server.

If you have a small shop with only a couple of visitors per day and your hosting provider did not oversell his server, you might do ok. But anywhere near 50 concurrent visitors and you need a dedicated cpu of 2 ghz and at least 1 GB of RAM. 50 concurrent visitors means you have 50 people going through your website and place their order at the same time.
